As an expectant mother makaing an adoption plan, you have rights. Below are some of the rights you have.
Please note: You do not become a birthparent until you sign relinquishment papers signing over the rights of your child. Until then, you are still your child’s parent… And if you do choose to make an adoption plan and relinquish your rights, you will forever play a role in your child’s life because YOU gave him or her life!
You have the right to:
- Be treated with respect and dignity.
- Choose the adoptive parents to raise your baby.
- Have all of your questions answered honestly and truthfully.
- Hold, see, spend time with, and name your baby.
- Choose the level of openness you are comfortable with.
- Receive pictures and updates of your child until the age of 18 if you so desire.
- Actively participate in creating your adoption plan.
- Receive pre and post adoption counseling if you desire.
- Right to receive assistance with your doctor’s visits and living expenses prior to the adoption, and hospital bills within the limits of the law.
- Make whatever choice you feel is the best one for your baby.
