Who Will be in the Delivery Room with You?

Have you given any thought as to who you would like to be in the delivery room with you when you give birth? As your due date draws near this is something that you will want to give some thought to.

If you are still involved with your baby’s father, have a boyfriend or spouse, then they are an obvious choice. If you are still friendly with your child’s father but not “together” then you may still wish to ask him to be in the delivery room with you since this is his child too, but also don’t do anything or ask anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable.

If you are not with your child’s father or the thought of having him in the delivery room with you makes you totally uncomfortable, then asking a family member (like a mom, sister, aunt, or cousin) or a close friend to be with you instead is a good idea.

Whomever you choose will need to be supportive of you. You’ll want someone who is level handed and can stay relatively calm and help you stay calm.

With my first pregnancy, my Mom was in the delivery room with me. She was a huge comfort to me and has always been really good at helping me stay calm so although my second pregnancy was difficult for her, I still knew that I wanted her to be in the delivery room with me. I also wanted my husband (but then boyfriend). I had also planned for my son’s adoptive mother to be in the delivery room. I was not comfortable with his adoptive father being present.

Choosing to have the adoptive parents in the delivery room with you is an extremely personal decision. Some are all for it since it can be a shared experience while others do not view it favorably thinking that having the adoptive parents in the delivery room can put pressure on the mother to follow through with placement even if she begins to change her mind. However, if you do choose to have them in the delivery room, choose to have someone else there as well that is there just for you, to support you and be your coach through the process.

Again, whom you choose to have in the delivery room with you is a personal decision but definitely one you should begin giving some thought to.
