Your baby was due yesterday. I’m sure you’re ready to throttle the next person or series of people who ask the following questions (and one statement):

  • How are you feeling? (Obviously, very pregnant.)
  • Are you still pregnant? (Uh, yes?)
  • Is that baby ever going to come out? (I hope so!)
  • Wow, you’re huge! (Shut up.)

There are others as just about every question and statement at this points to the fact that the baby was due and the baby is still in your womb. Hello, Captain Obvious! My only advice regarding the questions and statements by other people is to ignore them. Easier said than done!

As you attempt to ignore the stupidity of others, there are some things you can do to make this (uncomfortable) time pass. Maybe not quicker… but just pass.

1. Go walking! While it isn’t proven to make the baby come any sooner, the exercise is good for you. Take a partner and a cell phone in case your water breaks along the way!

2. Do something to pamper yourself. This pregnancy has probably seemed like a long and tumultuous ride for you. Get a pedicure or a massage. Take a long hot bath. Just do something for yourself.

3. Write a letter to your child. If you decide to place your child for adoption, sending a letter with your child explaining your reasons for the decision is a great gesture (even if you plan on having an open adoption). While you may have considered it before, finishing it up in these long, overdue days is a great way to pass time.

4. Readdress your birth plan and your hospital bag. Have you forgotten anything? (Camera! Don’t forget your camera!) Have you changed your mind about any of your hospital stay options? You’re down to the wire. Make changes as necessary. While you’re at it, read some positive birth stories to get yourself in an optimistic mood for the process!

5. Eat something spicy! Or try any of the other wives’ tales about kick-starting labor and delivery (as long as they are safe for you and your child taking into consideration your unique issues). There are lots of them! (But, in reality, you will go into labor when your baby and your body are ready.)

I promise. You will go into labor. Just practice breathing, get yourself ready and enjoy these last few moments (or days, or, perhaps, week or two) with your baby.
