If you are making an adoption plan, you have probably been thinking a little on what type of family you would like for your baby. When choosing an adoptive family, there are many things to consider. Unlike the birthmothers of earlier years who had no say so in the family that would be raising their child, in this era, YOU get to decide the type of family you want to raise your child and YOU get to select them.
Before beginning the selection process, you should think long and hard about what type of family you are looking for. What characteristics are important to you? It’s even ok (and recommended) to make a list of what you want in a family. You may be looking for a family with other children or you may wish for your child to be the only child. You may want the family to be a certain religion or religion may not play a factor in your decision at all. You may want there to be a stay at home parent in the family you choose or it may not bother you if both parents are working. You may want a young couple or you may desire an older, more experienced couple. These are all things to think about!
This is an important decision, one that will affect the life of your child and yourself for a lifetime. Please give it much thought and consideration and do not rush or let yourself be forced into a decision.
Here’s a closer look at some of the above mentioned qualities/characteristics that you may be looking for in a prospective family.
How important to me is it that my baby be raised in a 2 parent family?
For some expectant mothers, not being able to provide a stable father is one of the main reasons for placing their baby in an adoption agreement. But for others, a single parent placement may be suitable if the parent can completely provide for the child.
