Visitors in the Hospital

In my last post, I wrote about giving some thought to who you want to be in the delivery room with you when you are in labor. But another issue that will arise during your hospital stay is who you want or do not want to visit you in the hospital.

Typically most new mothers will have anywhere from one to three days in the hospital after giving birth. It depends on your health, hospital policy, what type of delivery you have, etc… Unless you take your baby home from the hospital with you before placement (which is totally an option, read more about that here) then the hospital time may be the only alone time you have with your newborn.

While it is precious time to spend with your baby, you may wish to have a few visitors. Depending on your situation and circumstances you may invite family members, friends, etc to visit. (You’ll need to check about hospital policy for the number of visitors allowed as well as the time visitors may visit.) But I do caution you from having too many people visit. I made that mistake.

When I was in the hospital with Charlie for three days after a c-section, I had many visitors. I had my family, friends, co-workers, and even allowed Charlie’s adoptive family to bring friends and family into my hospital room as well. This is one thing that I regret. A (Charlie’s adoptive mom) and I discussed this recently and she actually regrets it too.

It was crazy constantly having people in and out of the room. The only real alone time I was able to have with Charlie was at night. If I could go back and do it over, I’d limit to only my closest friends and my parents.

So, as you are giving some thought to your hospital experience, think about which visitors are the most important to you.

If you want to spend time with your baby while you are in the hospital, you should let hospital staff know as soon as possible, too. I was lucky enough to have my mother with me to make sure that the staff all knew I wanted to spend as much time with my daughter as possible. Some of them were suprised/confused at this and it had to be said a lot. Most had assumed that since I was giving her up for adoption, I wouldn't want to see her.
