Now that 2006 has come and gone, Baby Center has published their annual Baby Names of the Year list. I always find these lists interesting.

Before I share the list, let me just remind expectant moms who may be making adoption plans that you do have the right to choose a name for your child. I have covered this topic before in past posts that I will provide links to at the bottom of this post.

The list is extensive and includes the top 100 baby names of 2006 for both boy and girl names but I will just share the top 10 for each gender. You can view the whole top 100 here.

Noah is on the list, which is the name of my first son. When I named him I didn’t know another Noah, now they seem to be everywhere! Charlie made the top 100 coming in at number 78.

Baby Center also released top naming trends for 2006. This is interesting too.

• Single-syllable names are quite popular for boys (nearly 20 percent of the Top 100), but not popular for girls (only 6 percent).
• Almost 40 percent of the top 100 boys’ names have a suffix with the sound “—en”: Logan, Landon, Devin.
• Nearly 40 percent of the top 100 girls’ names have a suffix with the sound “—ah”: Alyssa, Amanda, Amelia.
• And almost 30 percent of the top 100 girls’ names have a suffix with the sound “—ee”: Hailey, Riley, Kaylee.

Mine and J’s are not on the list for the top 10 but I know she will be on the top 100.

We were very scared about having more Ivys around after we named our daughter. She was the first that we had heard of, except for a woman in her twenties that I had met.

That was 3 years ago, and I now know of at least 5 Ivys off of the top of my head. We try not to get too upset about it, but it is frustrating when although we don’t know the others directly, we do have aquaintances in common and all of their daughters were born after ours. We comfort ourselves that our Ivy is the oldest of the bunch. We try to view ourselves as trendsetters!

  3. Hannah and Michaela are on the list, but surprisingly Brittany is not. My name Alicia is not anywhere on it, which is ok with me. It used to be every time I turned around, someone was named Alicia.

Coley, are you going to to another list for 2008?
