An expectant mother considering adoption recently asked myself and a group of birthmothers about doctor’s appointments. She’s young and her upcoming appointment will be her visit to a gynecologist and she is pretty nervous about it, wondering what the appointment will be like.
I do recall being nervous before my first appointment when I was pregnant with Noah. With Charlie, I wasn’t quite as nervous because I had an idea as to what to expect but I still did have a few butterflies in my stomach.
Below is a list of what may happen at your first doctor’s appointment. Some procedures and policies may vary amongst different doctor’s offices so this is basically a list of things that could possibly happen.
- You will be given a zillion forms to fill out with medical history for you and your family as well as your baby’s dad and his family, if that is possible. They will also need your insurance information, so don’t forget to take that with you.
- You will take another pregnancy test in order to confirm your pregnancy.
- Your weight and blood pressure will be checked and documented.
- You will be given a general physical exam which usually includes a pap smear.
- Blood is typically drawn to test you (and the baby) for various conditions.
A few other tips:
- Remember that you don’t have to tell your doctor that you are considering adoption.
- You may want to take along someone who is supportive, such as your Mom or another family member, a friend, or your baby’s dad depending on your relationship with him.
- Try to arrive a few minutes early since you will have all those forms to fill out.
- If you can not make the appointment for some reason, be sure and call the doctor’s office and let them know.
- If you have any questions about your pregnancy, jot them down so you don’t forget them and ask the doctor or nurse your questions.
