Once you have decided on adoption, you must begin to think about what type of family you’d like to place your baby with. Unlike the birthmothers of earlier years who had no say so in the family that would be raising their child, in this era, YOU get to decide the type of family you want to raise your child and YOU get to select them.
Choosing adoptive parents typically starts with looking at profiles that couples hoping to adopt have put together to let an expectant mother considering adoption learn more about them. The profiles include photos and usually a letter written from the hopeful couple to the expectant mother.
Before looking at profiles, you should give yourself a little time to think about what type of family you are looking for to raise your baby. What characteristics are important to you? Make a list of traits you would like for the family you choose has. You may be looking for a family with other children or you may wish for your child to be the only child. You may want the family to be a certain religion or religion may not play a factor in your decision at all. You may want there to be a stay at home parent in the family you choose or it may not bother you if both parents are working. You may want a young couple or you may desire an older, more experienced couple. These are all things to think about!
This is an important decision, one that will affect the life of your child and yourself for a lifetime. Please give it much thought and consideration and do not rush or let yourself be forced into a decision.
To be continued.....
