Teen pregnancy seems to have been in the news a lot lately with the unplanned pregnancy announcement of sixteen year old Nickelodeon star, Jamie Lynn Spears and all the talk about the film Juno which is about a teen who experiences an unplanned pregnancy and then places her baby for adoption. Now, the ABC soap opera, One Life to Live, will be featuring their own teenage unplanned pregnancy storyline. According to a producer from One Life to Live they were already working on the unplanned pregnancy storyline before Jamie Lynn Spears made her announcement.

The story line revolves around sixteen year old character Starr Manning who is played by an actress of the same age, Kristen Alderson. Starr and her seventeen year old boyfriend, Cole (who is played by Brandon Buddy) have already had their first sexual encounter that aired last week. In the following weeks, Starr and Cole will have to deal with the aftermath from having unprotected sex.

I haven’t read anything yet though that says if the character will carry the pregnancy to term or not, however what I did read said that there will be about 40 upcoming episodes that will deal with this storyline. The producers of One Life to Live as well as the teenage cast members are working along with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy to use the episodes as teaching tools. There will even be Public Service Announcements featuring Kristen Alderson hitting the airwaves soon.

Kristen Alderson has also started a weekly blog called Start Talking with Kristen where she will discuss with others what is going on with her character on the show and teenage pregnancy.

I have watched One Life to Live off and on over the years. Ironically, I was pregnant and on bed rest with Noah when “Starr” was actually born on the soap! I may try to tune in occasionally and see where they take this storyline.

I don’t watch one life to live, but I do watch Days of our lives. On that show, an uncle is dating (and sleeping with) his niece. He is adopted so it is “OK” even though he calls his girlfriend’s grandparents mom and dad. Why is a person not considered family just because they are adopted on movies and TV? Am I alone in this?

    Orchid,
Ok, that’s just weird!!!! No you are not alone in thinking that it is odd. I have never noticed that in TV or movies before but it would bother me if I did. It is sending a mixed message to adopted children.

    Thank you for your comment.

  6. I commend OLTL and its young cast for doing this storyline and think it’ll help the young kids in society feel they do have options and that there are those who do care :) Thanks for posting this great article!

I like that NBC is spreading a good message to teens about not getting pregnant. I will have my brothers and sisters watch this show. I think it starts on June 25th at 9pm!
