Just when teen pregnancy seems to be the talk of the town, it’s all over television too! It’s being talked about everywhere lately as the news of the suspected teen pregnancy pact broke, which Jenna wrote about the other day.

That news came right about the time of the birth of Jamie Lynn Spear’s baby girl. In case you don’t know (which you’d have to live under a rock to not know the way they are broadcasting this) Jamie is the seventeen year old little sister to Brittany Spears and was the star of Disney’s hit Zoey 101 which ended earlier this year.

New shows portraying teen pregnancy are on their way to a television set near you. Well in all fairness, one isn’t about teen pregnancy per say, it’s actually being referred to as “birth control” for teen pregnancy. You may have seen the previews for The Baby Borrowers, which will premiere on NBC. The previews show young teenage couples on the “fast track to parenthood” by carrying for babies, toddlers, and even aging parents in the span of six episodes. Here’s a little blurb of the NBC website.

NBC’s upcoming reality series “The Baby Borrowers” is an intriguing new social experiment based on the hit British program that asks five diverse teenage couples — ages 18-20 — to fast-track to adulthood by setting up a home, getting a job and becoming caring parents first to babies, toddlers, pre-teens and their pets, teenagers and senior citizens — all over the course of three weeks.

Now, it sounds pretty good in theory, but when you actually read about it a little more you find that they are putting these couples up (with the babies, toddlers, etc.) in spacious houses in plush neighborhoods when in reality most young couples would not be able to afford that.

Then on July 1st, ABC Family will premiere a new show titled The Secret Life of the American Teenager which a teen drama. One of the lead characters, Amy, is “a band geek, smart, talented, and pregnant.”

If nothing else though, hopefully these shows can spark discussion about teen pregnancy, parenthood, and prevention amongst parents and their children.
