It’s prom night at some of the local high schools in my town. My nephew and his girlfriend will be attending. She has the perfect dress. He has a corsage for her. They’ll go to dinner with friends before the prom and the bowling after party to end the night. They’ll come home, tired but happy. But before they crawl into bed, they’ll check in on their sleeping son.
I’ve written about my nephew and his girlfriend before. They are teen parents. When they found out that L was unexpectedly pregnant, L was sixteen and T was seventeen. At first, they were not sure what they were going to do but ultimately they decided that they would parent. Yes, it would have been more ideal had they waited to have children until they were older, but it happened and they have dealt with it to the best of their abilities.
Landon will turn two years old this July. L and T have had a lot of family help and support in their parenting journey and they have managed to stay together. If you’d asked me two years ago, if I thought they would still be a couple raising Landon together today, I would have probably said no. Despite being teenagers, they are really good parents. Landon is loved and well cared for. He may not have every material possession as he grows up, but he has parents as well as an extended family that love him dearly.
I know teen parenting isn’t for everyone and I’m very proud of these two. It hasn’t been an easy road for them and I’m sure they have made mistakes, just as all parents do, but they are making it and still managing to do some of the things that “normal” teens do like attending their high school prom.
