During an unplanned pregnancy, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the stress and drama of the whole situation. It’s important to try and take good care of yourself (which in turn is taking care of your baby) during your pregnancy.
Below are a few ways to take care of yourself. Most of these are simple things, but if you are like me you tend to forget the common sense things during a stressful situation.
- Cut back and get plenty of rest. Try not to overshcedule yourself or take on too much. Pace yourself and learn to say no. You will probably feel most tired during the first and third trimesters of your pregnancy so try to bed early. Sleep is important!
- Take some time for you. Don’t forget to give yourself some down time just to de-stress, veg out, and relax whenever possible.
- Eat right. You are eating for two now so eating right is important! Avoid overeating by eating multiple, small meals through out the day. Pregnancy cravings can be overwhelming and giving into them in moderation is ok.

- Keep yourself hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is always important during pregnancy but never more so now that summer is upon us. If you don’t like plain water (like me) try jazzing it up a bit by adding some lemon, lime, or citrus wedges to the water.
- Get adequate prenatal care. Go to appointments and check ups as scheduled to assure that your baby and body are as healthy as possible.
- Get a little exercise. If you were involved in an exercise program prior to becoming pregnant, check with your health care provider to see if it is safe to continue or modify it. If you were not, consider taking up something light, such as walking. It will actually make you feel better as well!
Pregnancy is not the time to skimp on taking care of yourself, so do your best to take good care of you and your baby.
