Staying Cool During Pregnancy: Beat the Summer Heat

As I was reading the newest posts today, I came across Karianne’s post in the Fertility Blog entitled “When Not to Be Pregnant” and it got me thinking about when I was pregnant. I gave birth in September and October so both times I was big and pregnant during the summer heat. Where I live it’s humid and gets into the high 90’s during the worst part of the summer. This is no fun to deal with when you’re moody, cranky, and carrying around an extra twenty to thirty pounds!sun

Like Karianne, I found comfort in my darkened, air conditioned house. If the house felt too warm, then I’d just turn a fan directly on me. The pool was so nice too when I was brave enough to show up in a maternity swim suit!

So if you are pregnant, especially in your third trimester, I hope you are staying cool! Here are a few tips to help you beat the summer heat when you’re sweating for two!

  • Limit your outdoor activities to cooler parts of the day – typically early morning and evening are the coolest times of the day.

  • Avoid dark clothing made of spandex material. Try loose light or pastel colors instead; they won’t soak up the sun’s heat rays as much as dark clothing.

  • Don’t leave home without your water bottle! Drink lots of water so you don’t get dehydrated.

  • Take a cool shower or bath if you feel overly hot and need to cool down quickly.

  • Do your walking or exercising in a cool air conditioned area.

  • Heat can zap your energy so if you’ve been outdoors for awhile, put your feet up and take a nap.

  • Overheating isn’t just bad for you. It can be bad for your baby as well so take extra precautions during the summer heat to protect not only your own health but your baby’s!

Coley,

Thanks for the post! It is great to know that I'm not alone in dreading the heat while pregnant. One funny thing though, I did so great in my bikini while hugely pregnant! I wish that I could have worn it all the time and not just to the pool!
