Are you having trouble sleeping during pregnancy? It seems the further along you get, the harder sleeping becomes! You toss and turn looking for just the right position and every way you turn, it seems like the baby turns and lies that way too. And the best part is when your baby has days and nights confused, and just us as you get ready to head to dreamland, your precious one starts practicing field goals or pirouettes for the night.
Sleep is important for you. Extra weight and added hormones make you a bit more tired than usual. Rest is key - for your survival and sanity!
Here’s a few tips to help you get a better nights sleep.
- Get into a routine. A routine nightly bedtime ritual (a little TV, bath, book, bed) can help your body and your baby know what to expect and can help your body’s internal clock to start winding down.
- Try soothing bedtime rituals such as drinking a cup of caffeine free tea or warm milk, taking a warm shower, listening to soothing music, or reading a bit of a pleasant book.
- Get into position. During the third trimester, sleep on your left side to allow for best blood flow to the baby, your uterus, and kidneys. Avoid lying flat on your back.
- Avoid spicy foods that may cause heartburn. Heartburn can make sleep difficult!
- Support your body by using a pregnancy body pillow.
- Watch the caffeinated beverages. Caffeine can keep you wide eyed into the wee hours so avoid caffeinated beverages as much as possible.
- Try to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Not only is this important for your own health as well as that of your baby, but getting the necessary nutrients will help keep you feeling satisfied.
Good luck on your trip to dreamland. I hope you are able to get some much needed rest and sleep!
