If you are making an adoption plan, you may be wondering if you should inform your doctor or health care provider about it. I don’t have a solid yes or no answer for you. I think it is personal choice and just depends on how secure you are in your decision and the plans you are making for the birth of your baby and your hospital stay.
Obviously, if the potential adoptive parents are attending doctors appointments with your or you plan for them to be in the labor and delivery room, then it probably makes more sense to tell your doctor that you are making an adoption plan. If you are uncertain of your decision or are not planning on having the potential adoptive parents be a part of the labor and delivery, then you may opt to not notify your doctor. Again, it really is personal choice. You have to do whatever option makes you feel the most comfortable.
I have written before about the
dilemma of involving potential adoptive parents in the pregnancy and delivery of the baby. Some people feel that their involvement can lead to a sense of obligation on the expectant mother’s part, while others feel that having the prospective adoptive parent’s part can help the expectant mother and the prospective adoptive parents to grow closer and create a meaningful experience for all involved.
Again – it really comes down to personal choice, folks.
Since A attended a lot of my doctor appointments with me, I did tell my doctor about my decision to place my unborn baby for adoption. I don’t feel like I was ever really treated any differently or in a negative way as a result of divulging that information, but that’s not to say there are not those who would do that; it’s just not what happened to me.
In my next post, I will share a few tips with you on how to tell your doctor that you are making an adoption plan if that is what you ultimately decide to do.
