Towards the end of your second trimester or the beginning of your third trimester, you may wish to start looking around for a prenatal class.
Why should I take a prenatal class?
Prenatal classes can be a valuable resource for women during delivery as they teach breathing and focusing techniques ahead of time and prepare you mentally and physically for what lies ahead.
What will I learn at a prenatal class?
Classes will educate your about pregnancy and what will happen during labor and delivery. You typically will learn about warning signs of labor, how to tell you are in labor, when to the call the doctor, as well as breathing and focusing techniques. They typically educate you a little bit about epidurals and other pain management techniques that that particular hospital uses.
Who goes with me to the prenatal classes?
You should bring your labor
support person or labor coach with you to the prenatal classes. The instructor will teach them specific techniques and other things that they can do to assist, support, and encourage you during your labor and delivery. It is also good for them to go so that they know what to expect during labor.
What’s the benefit of taking a prenatal class?
The benefit is that you are prepared! You will know what to expect and how to deal with your labor as it progresses. It may make you feel more comfortable, confident, and in control as well.
Where can I find a prenatal class?
Many hospitals offer them periodically for free. Also check with your doctor or the local health department to see if they offer classes or know where you could take one. The local crisis pregnancy center here offers prenatal classes as well but I’m not sure if all crisis pregnancy centers do that or not.
