Have you noticed that during your pregnancy you have become forgetful and your brain isn’t working as well as it used to? Do you find yourself doing silly things like forgetting phone numbers you’ve dialed a million times before or thinking you can’t find your keys when they are right there in your purse? Or worse yet, in your hands? Don’t worry – it really is from the pregnancy and will get better.

Many women experience this forgetfulness, which has also been nicknamed “pregnancy brain” or “pregneisa.” It affects the short term memory and usually occurs mainly during the first and third trimester. In the first trimester you are dealing with the shock and awe of this pregnancy and by the third trimester you are just physically and emotionally exhausted from it all, so remembering things may seem like the least of your concerns!

I think the added stress of an unplanned pregnancy along with making a decision as to what to do about this pregnancy only adds to the forgetfulness and stress you are already feeling. I know I was always forgetting things like where I parked my car or what I’d had for breakfast that morning.

So, how do you cope with “pregnancy brain”? Baby Center suggests developing coping strategies for your self such as writing down reminders, keeping a detailed daily calendar, making lists of things you need to do, and assigning items you use frequently (such as your car keys) to designated places so that you do not have to continually search for them. When you find yourself getting stressed and then subsequently can not remember something, take a moment to calm down, breathe, and relax and then see if you can re-group and remember what you need to remember.

Sheesh, Coley, so many opportunities for women’s brains to stall – pregnancy, menopause! Interesting post – I had never heard of pregnancy befuddlement. Think it’s those silly hormones that get us.

I always said the baby is sucking all my brain cells. It’s a fact.
