Pregnancy and the Holidays

Dealing with the holidays can be taxing and stressful enough but add an unplanned pregnancy to the mix and you may not be in the most festive of moods. But you may still attend a few celebrations and try to be merry.

Below are some of the problems you may encounter while being pregnant this holiday season along with tips on how to deal with each problem.

  1. Holiday foods – Enjoy all the holiday foods but make sure things are cooked thoroughly and prepared well. Avoid icings and punches that may have uncooked eggs in them, alcohol, and over eating.

  2. Prop your feet up – Standing around at holiday gatherings and waiting in lines while shopping can cause swollen ankles. Try to sit down and take breaks from standing and when you make it home, relax and put your feet up.

  3. Back pains – Your back tends to bother you a bit more during pregnancy so keep this in mind. Ask for help if you have heavy bags or purchases to carry. If you do have to lift anything that is a tad bit heavy, remember to lift with your legs and knees, not your back.

  5. Heartburn – I’ve never had heartburn so much as I did during pregnancy! To keep heartburn to the nil or minimum, don’t eat big meals right before bed and avoid rich, fatty foods, spicy dishes, and citrus fruit.

  6. Don’t overdo it – The holidays are exhausting without the addition of a pregnancy, so be mindful of your body and how you are feeling and do not over do. Pregnancy puts a strain on your body as it is not only taking care of you now, but a baby too. So, try to take it easy on yourself and try to make time just to rest and relax.
