Mood Swings during Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, you may have noticed that you are experiencing some mood swings. One minute, you feel happy and content and then the next minute you are crying, possibly at a sappy commercial or maybe for no real apparent reason at all!

No you are not going crazy! Mood swings are normal during pregnancy because of the hormonal changes that your body is going through in addition to the stress and turmoil you are already feeling as you deal with an unplanned pregnancy and make decisions about both yours and yours baby future. Most women find that the moodiness flares up during the first trimester, eases in the second, and then reappears in the third trimester as your body prepares to give birth.

How to Deal with Mood Swings
Remind yourself that the mood swings are normal and then make an effort to try and keep things on an even keel, easier said than done for those experiencing unplanned pregnancies.

A few suggestions:

  • Get plenty of sleep, eat well, take care of you!

  • Take it easy whenever possible by taking short breaks during the day or taking a nap if it fits into your schedule.

  • Manage your stress rather than letting it build, find ways to decompress such as shrinking your “to do list” or asking for help with things.

  • Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling.

  • Do something for yourself that makes you feel good whether it’s to take a nap, watch a funny movie, or paint your nails.

If your mood swings don’t let off and seem to last for more than two weeks, then you should consult your doctor. Some women do suffer from depression during pregnancy and if your mood swings persist, are intense, and pretty constant, then you may be one of those women so definitely let your doctor know.

Great advice! I find that napping whenever possible and/or taking a warm (not hot) bath can be very helpful.

Being tired, feeling anxious and having wierd problems with appetite have always been associated with mild depression for me. So being pregnant- at least the first trimester- mimics that and it's important for me to do the same things I would to pull out of a non-pregnancy slump.

It's hard to get myself out the door for a walk or go meet friends when I feel nauseated and sleepy, but it really does help.
