Below are some warning signs, if you will, of things expectant mothers considering adoption should be on the look out for regarding the potential adoptive parents you may be matched with.

1. Adoptive parents that do not have a home study. You can not adopt without an approved home study.
2. Adoptive parents who give you money and the money comes straight from them to you. Any money the adoptive parents may provide you with for living expenses, medical care, etc. should go through the agency or attorney involved.
3. Adoptive parents that pressure you and say things like, “we are already attached to the baby” or “our son/daughter is so excited, if you change your mind he/she will be so upset.”

4. Adoptive parents who do not respect your boundaries and privacy.
5. Adoptive parents who make demands.
6. Adoptive parents who seems very desperate or seem to say anything at all to adopt a baby.
7. Adoptive parents who do not seem to think of your needs as well as the baby’s.
8. Adoptive parents who want to fast track an adoption and not follow through with the proper legal requirements.
9. Adoptive parents whose views in open adoption seem to change more towards what you were hoping for.
10. Adoptive parents who are overly pushy.
11. Adoptive parents who are disrespectful towards you and your family.
12. Adoptive parents who do not want you to notify your baby’s birthfather.
13. Adoptive parents who buy you expensive gifts or a large amount of gifts.
14. Adoptive parents who seem to have things to hide.
15. Adoptive parents who already have a child and that child’s adoption was open and is now closed.

If you notice any of these warning signs, let your agency or attorney know your concerns and seriously consider finding a different couple to make an adoption plan with.

Great list Coley! I was mentally nodding “yes” as I read. The closed adoption issue particularly is HUGE.

Yup! This one is very, very common, One “open” adoption couple used this phrase with my daughter, “We had a yearly letter and pictures in mind but but we MIGHT consider a few visits over the years.” Okkaaayyy. And that’s an open adoption??

Great list! #15 is a mind bender.
