How to Educate Yourself about Adoption

In my last post, I wrote about why you should educate yourself about adoption. Now you are probably wondering how you should go about educating yourself about adoption. Don’t worry; I have some ideas for you.

1. You are already doing this one but read blogs! Continue to read blogs like this one but also read blogs personal blogs written by birthmothers. They give you great insight into the emotional side of adoption from a birthmother’s point of view. You also may want to read the blogs of some adoptees as well. Their blogs will give you insight into how they feel and the issues that adult adoptees may deal with as a result of adoption.

2. Talk with other birthmothers. Talking with other birthmothers gives you an opportunity to ask your questions and hear first hand about the adoption process from a birthmother’s perspective. Talk to all types of birthmothers. Speak with young birthmoms, older birthmoms, birthmothers with good experiences, birthmothers with bad experiences, birthmothers with open adoptions, birthmothers with closed adoptions, etc. You can also get agency referrals from other birthmothers as they can share first hand how they were treated by the agency that they used. The forums at Adoption.com are a great place to meet birthmothers. You also may want to see if there is a birthmother support in your area that would let you sit in on a meeting.

3. Talk with adoptees too! Talking with adoptees will give you some insight as to how they feel about being adopted and their birthmothers.

4. Visit the forums. The forums here are a great place to explore and talk with all members of the adoption triad.

5. Read about the adoption laws. Adoption laws are governed by each state so read up on your state’s adoption laws. Know when after birth you can sign relinquishment papers, how long you have if you wish to revoke your consent, etc.

All great advice! I would be skeptical about an agency referral to a birth mother. My guess is that most would hand pick the rare super positive ones only.

New birth mothers may not be able to provide much help either. The full effect of their decision may not have hit them yet. However, I heartily agree that you need lots of feedback - positive and negative.
