Are you having trouble sleeping during your pregnancy? You are not alone! Many women complain of this especially in the third trimester. You toss and you turn trying to get in a comfortable position, which can be hard to do with your ever expanding belly! There are some common pregnancy culprits that could be hindering your sleep. Below are some ways to deal with those culprits and get some much needed rest!
- Getting up a zillion times a night to go to the bathroom? Do not drink a lot of fluids before going to bed but be sure to drink plenty through out the day so you do not get dehydrated. Also, try placing a night light in the bathroom and using that as your light instead of turning on brighter lights that may make you more awake.
- Heartburn keeping you awake? Try eating smaller meals and snacks multiple times through out the day instead of large meals three times a day. Additionally, stop eating a few hours before bed time, avoid spicy foods, and try elevating your head slightly by sleeping on an additional pillow.
- Belly too big to get comfortable during the last trimester? Avoid lying flat on your back, instead try your left side to allow for the best blood flow to the baby, your uterus, and kidneys . Use a body pillow to support your pregnant belly.
- Vivid dreams or nightmares waking you up? Try to get in a relaxed state of mind before going to bed by listening to soothing music, taking a warm shower, reading a calming book, or drinking a cup of warm caffeine free tea or milk. Don’t do any serious projects right before bed time and avoid heavy discussions (about things like finances) right before going to bed.
Good luck getting some much needed "ZZZs!"
