Finishing your Education - Part 3: College

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, that in conjunction with Heather’s post from earlier this week, I would find some educational resources that might be of help to you. If education is your main reason for placing your child and you feel torn between the two, perhaps, some of the information listed below will be of help to you. I believe information is empowering when trying to make a big decision like this. Even if you do follow through with your adoption plan, I still feel that it’s beneficial to have had this information, so that you were able to make an informed decision and not have so many “what if’s” about the education factor in your decision.

If you are in college or college is the direction you are heading, many colleges often have programs for parents such as on campus daycare facilities and parent support programs. These are designed to help college students who are also single parents further their education while still maintaining their priority of child raising. There are also specific scholarships for single parents continuing their education. Studies show that parents who complete college typically raise children who will complete college.

The Raise the Nation Foundation is a program that provides scholarships and grants to single mothers that are continuing their education. In addition to scholarships, they can also provide single mothers with child care assistance and assistance with buying textbooks. They believe you can improve who you are – through education.

” Our mission at Raise The Nation is to provide economic support to single parent women who want to continue with their education or repay student loans. We believe, through education, single parent women will be able to achieve independence for their families and will be successful in their goal of raising the nation — their children.”

If you are attending a new college, be up front that you have a child and see what services they may have for you. You’re never going to know until you ask!

I hope this has been of some help to you!

That is a great post Coley. I wish I had had this information when I was a single mom going to college. I know that information will help someone.
