Pregnancy dreams; I’m sure every woman who has been pregnant has had them and can tell you about a crazy one or two. It seems that during pregnancy dreams (and even nightmares) become more intense and more vivid than pre-pregnancy dreams. You may notice the more intense dreams in your first trimester but they usually reach their peak during the third trimester. Also, as your due date draws nearer, first time mothers may have more intense dreams reflecting their nerves and anxieties about their upcoming labor and delivery.

Dreams are caused by your emotional state and are a subconscious way for our mind’s to deal with all the pregnancy emotions so it’s only natural that your dreams be a little out of the ordinary during pregnancy as you deal with all the extra pregnancy related hormones and emotions. Your fears and anxieties about your pregnancy and upcoming labor and delivery may be expressed through your dreams.

Pregnancy may increase your every day anxieties. For example, riding in a car may make you a little nervous now that you are pregnant. These anxieties may come out in your dreams. Although sometimes frightening, dreams are healthy and are a way for us to work through some of the emotions and feelings that our mind may not be able to handle. If you are considering adoption, the fears related with adoption may come out in your dreams as well.

One birthmother, J, recalls her recurring dreams during pregnancy. She would dream that she’d had her daughter and placed her and things were going pretty well until one day, the adoptive mother closed the adoption. J would wake up from this dream each time crying. No doubt, her fears and anxieties were coming through loud and clear in that dream!

Curious as to what your dreams mean? If you awake from a dream during the night, write down as much as you can remember as soon as you wake up. I’m not good at remembering my dreams later, so if I want to remember them I have to write them down literally the second I wake up. Later during the day, go over what you have written down and see if you are expressing any fears or concerns about your pregnancy, your baby, or your possible adoption decision.
