At least one in ten women suffers from depression during their pregnancy. I would think (although I am no expert) that the added stress of dealing with an unplanned pregnancy may put you at a greater risk for depression during pregnancy.

Depression during pregnancy often goes undiagnosed because many women attribute it to the fluctuating pregnancy hormones and since you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy you may attribute it to the extra stress that it brings.
Depression during pregnancy can increase your risk of preterm labor.

Risk Factors for Depression during Pregnancy

  • Family history or personal history of depression – If you’ve personally struggled with depression in the past or family members have a history of depression; you are at an increased risk to experience depression during pregnancy.

  • Relationship difficulties – Pregnancy can sometimes put strain on relationships, especially in an unplanned pregnancy. Dealing with this strain can cause hopeless feelings and can put you at a higher risk for depression during pregnancy.

  • Problems during your pregnancy – Complications during a pregnancy can take an emotional toll on you and can put you at an increased risk for depression during pregnancy.

  • Stressful life events – Financial worries, career problems, relationship difficulties, unplanned pregnancy situations, etc. can create feelings of helplessness which put you at an increased risk for depression during pregnancy.

Symptoms of Depression

  • A sense that nothing is fun or enjoyable anymore

  • Feeling blue, sad, or empty most of the day, everyday

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Extreme irritability or agitation or excessive crying

  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time

  • Extreme or never ending fatigue

  • Inappropriate or constant feelings of worthlessness and/or hopefulness

If you are experiencing any of the above mentioned symptoms for a prolonged period of time (more than a few weeks) consultant your doctor as you may be experiencing depression during pregnancy.
