As the weather begins to get cooler, it also brings about cold season. Dealing with a cold is never any fun but is especially not fun during pregnancy when you may already not being feeling your best and when you are limited as to what medications you can take to ease cold symptoms.
Symptoms of a cold during pregnancy don’t differ from the normal symptoms of a cold, although you may feel the symptoms stronger. I can recall from pregnancy that my colds were stronger and lasted longer during pregnancy than normally. Cold symptoms include cough, congestion, sore throat, watery eyes, sneezing, and feeling more tired than usual just to name a few.
So what should you do if you are pregnant and begin feeling under the weather and catch a cold? Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to avoid catching a cold during cold season all together as they are very common but below are a few tips on things you can do if you do catch a cold.
- Rest as much as possible.
- Drink plenty of clear fluids like water and juices. Chicken soup broth is also good for colds.
- Use a humidifier and run it while you are sleeping.
- Drinking hot water (or warm tea) with honey and lemon can help soothe a sore throat.
- Check with your doctor before taking any over the counter medications or cold remedies.
- Also consult your health care provider if your symptoms last more than a week.
- To make breathing while sleeping easier, try sleeping in a recliner chair or with your head propped up on several pillows so that you are sleeping in a semi upright position.
- Take warm showers. This can help clear up nasal stuffiness.
In order to prevent colds, take care of yourself by getting plenty of rest, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and washing your hands through out the day.
