Cold Season

I have this cold that I can’t seem to shake. Pesky little devil! It’s been visiting about a week. You know the kind; stuffy nose, headache, can’t breathe, sore throat, raspy night club singer voice! Yikes! Unfortunately, I seem to catch colds easily and keep them a lot in the fall and winter months. Cold season is upon us folks!

Having this cold reminded me of having colds during pregnancy! Not fun at all and it seemed to take me even longer to share them during pregnancy. Your body already feels a little weird and “off” and then you go and add a cold to the mixture. In general colds are not dangerous to yours or your baby’s health; they are probably more aggravating and annoying than anything!

Below are some cold tips and remedies for pregnant women experiencing cold like symptoms from Dr Spock.

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water, chicken soup, juices, and warm tea are good sources.

  • Use a humidifier. Place it close to your face when you sleep. During the day, you can make a tent out of a sheet draped over your head. Stay under the tent for 15 minutes, three or four times a day.

  • Rub a mentholated product (like Vicks Vaporub) on your chest according to package instructions.

  • For nasal stuffiness, use saline drops. You can buy these at drugstores or prepare a solution at home. Just dissolve 1/4 teaspoon salt in 8ounces of water. Place a few drops in each nostril, wait 5 to 10 minutes, and then gently blow your nose.

  • To make breathing easier, sleep in a recliner or prop up your head with lots of pillows so that you are in a semi-upright position.

  • Take a warm shower. This can help clear nasal stuffiness and mucus.

  • Get plenty of rest.

And like with anything, if you don’t get better after a few days, call your doctor! Some one pass me a Kleenex!

Warm showers are the best!!! Especially if your back aches and your nose is stuffed. You have the hot water hitting your back and then the mist clearing your nose.
