Childbirth education classes can help you prepare for labor and birth. Many hospitals nowadays offer childbirth education classes. They typically cover the warning signs of labor, techniques to cope with pain, breathing techniques, when to call your doctor, the normal progression of labor, and more.

The goal of childbirth education classes is to provide you with information and education to help minimize your fears and anxieties and to educate you on tips and techniques that have been helpful to other moms. These can be especially helpful for many first time mothers.
Two well known types of childbirth instruction are Lamaze and the Bradley Method.
The Lamaze Method
Basic philosophy: If you know what to expect and how to focus your energy outside of your body, you'll cope with pain better.
Lamaze uses relaxation techniques, such as shallow breathing and massage to ease pain. Women receive information about anesthesia and medical procedures so that they can make informed choices.
The Bradley Method
Basic philosophy: Tuning into your body is the best way to cope with the pain.
Bradley teaches natural childbirth in the absence of medical complications. It emphasizes exercise, nutrition and deep-breathing techniques.
Some childbirth instructors are certified by the International Chilbirth Education Association, which does not promote one techinique oever the other, so class content varies on the individual instructor.
Finding a childbirth education class in your area should not be too difficult. Many hospitals now offer evening or Saturday classes and this is typically the least expensive way to go, so check with your local hospital. You can also check local birth centers and health departments for classes.
