I’m a day late (due to a bad stomach bug going around here in SC) on the Birthmom of the Week Feature this week. I’ve been getting a lot of comments and emails about it and apparently you guys are enjoying this new segment!

This week’s Birthmom of the Week is Shonna. Shonna is a rather new birthmom. Her son just turned six months old. Shonna and her baby’s birth dad are still together and both reside in Sunny California. This week’s Birthmom of the Week is Shonna. Shonna is a rather new birthmom. Her son just turned six months old. And because Shonna was so thorough with her answers (thank you Shonna!) this one will be a two part-er!

1. How old were you when you placed your child for adoption? I was 29 years old.

2. What circumstances led you to choose adoption? My boyfriend and I were barely making ends meet, and definitely couldn't support a child as well. Also, my situation was a bit different in that we didn't know I was pregnant until about an hour before our son was born. We had to make life-altering decisions in about 2 weeks.

3. Did you consider parenting? Every second of every day, but ultimately I had to decide what was best for my beautiful baby. I knew that his birth dad and I both loved him with all our hearts...we love him SO much that we knew we couldn't keep him. My heart wanted so badly to take him home and keep him, but I know that love won't buy diapers for his little bottom or put food in his mouth.

4. Was your child's dad supportive? Yes. We made the decision together. It brought our relationship to a whole new level because of how brutally honest we HAD to be with each other. I knew that if I let him make the decision there would be so many regrets on my part. We talked about it and he told me what he wanted, but knew that it was my decision. He pretty much said that he wanted to place our son, but would support me no matter what I decided to do.

5. Were there any influences (parents, birth dad, etc) that led you to your decision?
I would have to say that God helped me to make this decision. The birth dad was very much leaning toward adoption but the way everything happened, everything fell into place, I KNEW that it was the right thing to place Sean.
