As I mentioned in a
previous post, it is good to stay indoors whenever possible during the hot summers while pregnant but there may be times during the summer in which you have to be outdoors or in which you just want to be outdoors. As a pregnant woman out in the sun, there are a few things you should remember.
- Drink lots of water. It’s easy to get hydrated when you are outdoors for extended periods of time so be sure to drink plenty of water.
- Don’t forget the sunscreen! Pregnancy can do weird things to the body and even if you are not normally the type of person who sunburns, you may sunburn outdoors during pregnancy so be sure to lather up in a strong sunscreen.
- Avoid being outdoors (or at least in the direct sunlight) during the hottest parts of the day if it all possible. The hottest times of the day is typically from around ten in the morning till about three in the afternoon, depending on where you live.
- Avoid wearing dark clothing. Try loose light or pastel colors instead; they won’t soak up the sun’s heat rays as much as dark clothing.
- Being in the sun and heat can zap your energy, so if you’ve been outdoors awhile go inside, prop your feet up, and relax or take a little nap.
- If you feel like you have gotten too hot, jump in a pool, lake, or take a quick cold shower to cool off quickly.
Overheating isn’t just bad for you, but it can be bad for your baby too, so if you are going to be outdoors during the summer, take extra precautions to protect you and your baby.
