I love articles that feature success stories of young mothers who experienced an unplanned pregnancy and then parented successfully. With my first unplanned pregnancy I was so doubtful of my skills as a young mother and hearing that other women had faced the same obstacles as me was helpful. It’s also helpful because these types of stories usually tell the challenges in parenting as well.
This particular article features a young mother, Megan Torres. She became pregnant when she was sixteen years old. Megan had fears that many of us who have become unexpectedly pregnant at a young age felt. She wondered what her mother and siblings would say and what her future would be like. She had seen a lot of pregnant girls her age drop out of high school once they became pregnant.
But with the help of a supportive family, determination, and a good program to assist teen mothers, Megan has been able to parent and attend a school. The particular program offered at her high school involves tutors who go to the homes of pregnant students and new mothers to make sure they keep up with their school work before and after delivery. However going to school before she got to the point of being home tutored wasn’t easy. Megan recalls many mornings in which the morning sickness was so intense that she didn’t even want to get out of the bed.
“I wouldn’t have been able to stay in school if it wasn’t for the people at the school who came by my home,” Torres said. “I would have missed too much time having the baby.”
Megan gave birth to her son Jayden in January of 2006 and he became her motivation and gave her the drive to continue on with school. Along with the help and support of her Mother, Megan has continued school taking advantages of not only the classes offered to all students, but also the special classes offered to teen mothers like a class on child development and nutrition.
Megan is almost done with her high schooling, she will graduate on Friday. She now plans to go on to a community college in the fall and study nursing.

This is great! I would like for there to be more success stories like this for the teen mother that does not have the supportive family and/or is in foster care. These girls are in serious danger because on a whole within our society morals and values have diminished to almost nothing! This is evident in the actions and language these girls are using. Between the years of abuse, neglect and depression these girls have adopted a very nasty vindictive towards the world. So as a people I would love to hear stories, positive suggestions how young mothers in foster care can be motivated to achieve greatness!
