A few weeks back,
I wrote about the adoption storyline on one of ABC’s hit shows,
Grey’s Anatomy. The particular storyline I previously wrote about was concerning one of the main characters on the show, Izzy. Izzy is a birthmother whose daughter was a patient at the hospital. As her biological mother, Izzy's bone marrow was needed to save her daughter's life.
The adoption storyline crept in again last week in Thursday night’s episode. I just haven’t had a chance to write about it until now.
A same sex male couple that has appeared on the show before, Joe and Walter, showed up at the hospital asking the Dr. Addison Shepherd (an OBGYN) if she could look over their "birthmother," Rina. One of the men did correct the other and call her a "potential birthmother." Addison said that of course she would be happy to check out the "birthmother" (meaning examine her) and asked them to make her an appointment. This "birthmother" hadn't had any prenatal care. Stereotypical? Walter and Joe then explained that she was in town meeting them and would be leaving town again very soon so the doctor agreed to examine her that day.
In a not so surprising twist, the "birthmother" ends up being pregnant with twins. Can we say Friends?
The show ends with the expectant mother clutching her stomach in pain so I suspect that she is going to go into early labor or something equally dramatic may be wrong with her babies. Will she place the babies? Or will she parent? Only the writers (and the cast) know the answer to that but we will all know this Thursday when the new episode airs.
Adoption seems to be popping up into more and more television shows and it’s popped up an awful lot on Grey’s Anatomy and I have inkling that someone on the writing team may have a personal connection to adoption. I guess we will just have to stay tuned to see what turns the story line will take.
