Ringing In the New Year While Pregnant

December 26th, 2009

Happy New Year! Unless you're due or being induced in the next few days, you will likely ring in the New Year while pregnant. Though, to be fair, even if you're due today, you could still be pregnant for awhile if the baby isn't quite ready to make an exit as of yet! Whatever the case, the ending of one year and beginning of yet another can serve as a very important time of reflection. In 2009, you found yourself pregnant. I know that the year I became pregnant with my relinquished daughter will forever stand out as one of the more difficult years of my life. It was fraught with hard decisions, health problems and, as I gave birth and relinquished… [more]

Pregnant on Thanksgiving

November 23rd, 2009
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

Thanksgiving is in four days. Perhaps you're already feeling like a stuffed turkey. Perhaps, like I did six years ago, you're dreading the holiday meal with your family while unexpectedly pregnant. Maybe you're dreading the day alone as you've already decided to avoid the whole family situation. Whatever the case, Thanksgiving and unplanned pregnancy can be difficult. You can, however, survive it! I woke up on Thanksgiving morning six years ago to find that the Munchkin had "dropped." This process is technically referred to as lightening and simply means that the baby is descending into your pelvis, readying you (and the baby) for labor! Don't panic, however, as it is a rather early sign. It just means that you'll be walking around with lots of… [more]

Holiday Emotions & Pregnancy Hormones

December 9th, 2008
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

The holidays are stressful. They can also be an emotional time for many different people. Pregnancy is stressful. It can also be an emotional time for many different expectant mothers. If you combine the two and add in the extra stress that an unplanned pregnancy might bring to the table, you'll find that holiday emotions and pregnancy hormones can create a catastrophic result! That is, if you're not prepared! You can be prepared though. Knowing, ahead of time, that the two things combined (holiday emotions and pregnancy hormones) could lead to some issues, could be enough in itself. Sometimes the simple knowledge that you are going into a difficult time is enough to keep you aware of your own emotional state. And, of course, sometimes it isn't… [more]

How to Give This Season

December 2nd, 2008
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be fretting about how you could possibly give this year. Finances and saving money may be one of your primary concerns. Did you know that you can still give without spending any money? I'm not even talking about homemade crafts that you can make for people. (Though that's a great idea, too! Look into it. I'm no help on the crafty front. Trust me.) Instead, I'm talking about how you can get into the spirit of giving this holiday season without spending a dime. Being in the situation you are right now, I'm sure you recognize how important it is to support those who are going through a difficult time. As such, there's no time like the present to… [more]

Go Buy an Ornament

December 1st, 2008
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

As Christmas nears, you're probably overwhelmed with the amount of things that need to be done on top of being pregnant. I remember it well! I was actually due to have my daughter that I relinquished for adoption on Christmas Eve! She was born two weeks early and home with her parents by that time. All the same, I learned some things from hindsight that I thought I could pass off to you regarding the holidays, unplanned pregnancy and that overwhelmed feeling! I want you to do something this week: go buy one of two ornaments. Go buy either a Baby's First Christmas ornament if you're due (or overdue!) soon or buy an ornament that shows that you're expecting this Christmas. Yes, they make those. They make… [more]

What Do You Have To Be Thankful For?

November 27th, 2008
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

You might be kind of torn today if you're experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Especially if you are dealing with family issues or fallout from/with the baby's biological father, you might not be feeling especially thankful. I remember that feeling! I do! I was very pregnant with the daughter I relinquished for adoption when Thanksgiving rolled around that year. While I had been on bed rest and staying at my own apartment, my parents brought me to their home the evening before Thanksgiving. I woke up on that Thursday morning and felt... different. Turned out the Munchkin had dropped and my belly was now pointing toward the floor! I remember it so well. Physical weirdness aside, it was very hard for me to find something to be thankful… [more]

Holiday Survival

November 14th, 2008

If you're experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be a little apprehensive about this holiday season. The holidays are notorious for family gatherings, running into old friends and general public meetings. How far along you are in your pregnancy will have an affect on how you might need to deal with people and their questions this season. If you're just newly pregnant, you won't likely have to field questions in public places. Running into a friend at the mall won't present a requirement to explain the basketball under your coat if you still aren't showing. You can, therefore, pick and choose whom you will tell about the pregnancy. When I say pick and choose, I do mean to be selective. The holidays are emotional enough on their… [more]

Weekend Fun: Halloween Costumes for the Expecting

October 20th, 2007
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

Halloween is just around the corner. Will you be dressing up this year? Some of the local businesses in my area require (or encourage rather) their employees to dress up and I often find it funny to see adults in costume I was never pregnant during Halloween so I never had to come up with a costume. Dressing up while pregnant might seem a little silly, but it could add a little fun to a stressful time during an unplanned pregnancy. Although, pregnancy could make dressing up a little more difficult, with a little creativity it is not impossible! I went searching the internet for costume ideas and have a few to share with you. If you don’t mind bearing your baby bulge, use your pregnant… [more]

Changes and What’s Coming Up in this Blog

August 31st, 2007
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

Have you noticed any subtle changes here in the crisis pregnancy blog? I’ve been doing some really late spring cleaning – I’ve cleaned up the categories, added more sub categories and overall have tried to make the blog more accessible and easier to find any specific topics that you may be searching for. I have some new upcoming plans for this blog as well. Once a week I will be doing a post that is related to the “parenting option” side of unplanned pregnancy. I will feature resources, government programs, websites, tips, suggestions, and success stories related to the parenting option. As I have said many times before, I really think that in order to make the most informed decision you should explore all your options… [more]

Staying Cool in the Heat while Pregnant

August 14th, 2007
Categories: Seasonal/Holidays

It has been hot, hot, hot in my neck of the woods lately! We reached above 100 degrees several times last week. I prefer to stay in doors in my nice air conditioned home whenever possible during heat waves. Being pregnant and dealing with this type of heat would not be fun! It’s bad enough just dealing with hot weather, but add the added weight and body changes that occur during pregnancy and you are probably feeling pretty miserable! So if you are pregnant, especially in your third trimester, I hope you are staying cool! Here are a few tips to help you beat the summer heat when you’re sweating for two!

  • Limit your outdoor activities to cooler parts of
