9_monthsIt is July 10th and I am 37 weeks pregnant and counting. I am obviously showing at this point in my pregnancy but not as much as you might think. I am still waiting tables like I would if I wasn't pregnant and every single person that I come into contact with now asks how far along I am and of course I have to ask them how far along they think I am, it's only fair. Four months is usually what I get and I giggle, explain that I have about two weeks left and I love the reaction I get. They all start asking the normal questions of the baby's sex, if I have chosen any names and everything else under… [more]

Creating a Blessingway Ceremony to Honor Your Transition to Motherhood

March 15th, 2011

pregoI had the opportunity to go to a workshop called “Creating a Blessingway Ceremony” or “Mother’s Blessing”. It was so beautiful. Since I am working with pregnant women and families, I am able to participate and share with you all the wonderful ideas I learn of how to celebrate pregnancy. Looking back, I wish that I had done more ritual celebrations around my pregnancy. My experiences of the moments between the birth of my daughter and her adoption were slim. I hear other first moms talk about how precious it was when they got to hold their baby. When I held my baby, time stopped. I gazed into her precious eyes, and they swallowed me up. And, suddenly, she was gone. Whatever your decision… [more]

As This Year Ends

2008 might hold some bad memories for you as your unplanned pregnancy likely began at some point in time this year. As we stand on the threshold of 2009, I encourage you to look at the future that awaits you with a positive outlook. True, you are still likely pregnant if you are reading this specific blog. True, you will then still be faced with some difficult decision. And, you know, labor and delivery. But don't panic! Trust me! You're going to be okay. I now encourage you to think about what lead you to this point. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying; don't dwell on your mistakes. But neglecting to address them, even mentally, could lead to an inability to move forward in this coming year. I… [more]

Okay, Fine. You’re Not Bristol.

This post is not political. Just a heads up. I've been reading some commentary on what Bristol Palin's pregnancy means for and to other young mothers and mothers-to-be. Everyone is quick to point out that she comes from a family that is financially stable, is blessed with a family who is offering their support and will be marrying the father of her baby. And then many an article that I have read is quick to say, "But that's not what other mothers are experiencing!" And it's true, of course. The majority of mothers experiencing unplanned pregnancies are not on the same playing field as Bristol. Young? Yes. Scared? Totally. But similarities quickly run out when you start dealing with real world, non-semi-celebrity status issues. But I'm… [more]

Going into Labor Unexpectedly

Categories: On the Light Side

It gets heavy here in this blog sometimes with all of the discussion about decision making, grief, pregnancy, etc. and I figure we could use a short break from the heavy topics and a little chuckle every now and then. The story below will give you a little laugh (or at least a smile as you shake your head in disbelief) and is proof that babies have their own schedules of when they should make their grand entrance into the world. A very pregnant but not quite to her due date woman named Antoria Gillon waited in line for over sixteen hours with other 13,000 hopeful contestants in the heat at Texas Stadium waiting for her turn to audition for the upcoming season of the hit reality… [more]

Knocked Up, The Movie

May 30th, 2007

I’ve heard a lot of hype about the new movie, Knocked Up, a comedy starring Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl (from Grey’s Anatomy) directed by writer and director Judd Apatow. You can guess by the title that someone is going to be pregnant in this movie. Katherine Heigl plays Allison Scott a twenty four year old television reporter and news journalist who is on the fast track to success and a big career. She celebrates a promotion by a night of drinking out on the town where she meets goofy, slacker Ben Stone, played by Seth Rogen. A one night stand occurs. Fast forward eight weeks and Allison finds herself in the midst of an unplanned pregnancy. Director Judd Aptow says that he wanted… [more]

Saturday Fun: Maternity Clothes

October 28th, 2006

Ah, one of the joys of pregnancy! Ok, I was only joking! No one likes gaining weight, so much weight and baby fat, that you have to buy new clothes only to wear them for nine months. I love clothes, what girl doesn’t? But I’m practical and buying clothes only to wear for nine months seems a tad bit wasteful to me, but such is life! I am lucky in the fact that a few close friends and I have shared maternity clothes. We stick them back in a big box when we are done and then share them when the next one of us is pregnant. So the box keeps growing, because we usually have to add a few things. There is always that special occasion… [more]
